THE STORY OF CHANGE
Life is a series of turns in the road which are sometimes planned and sometimes just occur. With these turns in the road sometimes, we often find it helpful if a supportive person is by your side that is not biased and just there to assist.
Debra can do this in the small business world or in the life/health coaching world. Her many years in small business assisting MANY business owners ensure their financial foundation was in the best shape possible has provided her a wealth of information to assist you as an entrepreneur. Bookkeeping/accounting/year end requirements, CRA compliance and setting up your systems to ensure financial and administrative functions are efficient so you the entrepreneur can focus on your important vision.
In addition, one of the turns in the road was in the health world that significantly impacted Debra's approach to health.
Have you ever had a word that was so significant in your life from a health perspective that it actually caused you to consider a health/lifestyle change?
That word/phrase for me was “you are pre-diabetic“. This statement created images of my future concerning thoughts of being diagnosed with TYPE 2 Diabetic. In my mind I recall my parents -both Type 2 Diabetics, taking medication for the rest of their lives. One parent not eating correctly and the other parent appearing to take it more seriously however both remaining on medication with the development of subsequent further complications. Do you know why I do not want to be a TYPE 2 diabetic? I do not want to take medication to live a camouflaged healthy life. What could I do about it? The doctor said, " eat less carbs and exercise more". I could reduce my carbs but exercise more?! I do not like exercise. Sure I can walk and I enjoy walking. I guess that’ll be my exercise. I continued on this path for a little bit, focusing more on less bread and less potatoes but I still ate some. Like many of us today, I had some stress in my life, which certainly did not help but when I went back for another blood test my blood sugar levels had dropped!? I was still pre-diabetic but I had made a change! If I can make this small change without working very hard does that mean I can make a bigger change? I was not sure but the next goal was to manage the stress in my life, again steps towards another goal and soon I had some more time to go for more walks. I had more time to get educated on what to eat. I found that I had insulin resistance. I found that I had metabolic syndrome. I had no idea about these words before and I decided to take some more focused action. I reduced my carbs even more and chose to eat the carbs that would keep my sugars low enough that I could burn them off. This turned out to be vegetables that were growing above the ground like broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts. I had the required amount of protein from a meat source which turned out to be about the size of a deck of cards and I did not have any rice, potatoes or any quinoa or food of this nature. I took more walks and the weight started to come off. Just a couple of pounds a week or so and within five months blood work showed that my blood sugar was in an acceptable range. I was thrilled however could I continue eating this way? Did I have to continue eating this way? In my journey I had purchased a blood glucose monitor so I could actually monitor what my blood was when I woke up in the morning after fasting. This was a great tool to scientifically monitor what I was doing. Also for me weighing myself every day was a positive experience. If my weight went up a few grams or a pound I knew that perhaps I was not eating the best foods for my body. I tried eating sourdough bread and whole wheat bread and after testing and weighing myself I decided that it was more important for me to keep my weight the way it was and continue eating with whole foods and no bread etc.
Was it the way I ate that made the difference? Was it that I learned to control the stress in my life? What is it because I added walking to my life maybe 30 minutes three or four times a week? I believe all of these made a difference however the most important difference is was the way I now approached food. I have a different mindset. This is extraordinary. The process I went through was small positive baby steps which led to this major transformation.
THIS MINDSET SHIFT IS EXTRAORDINARY. I had lost weight before however this time my goal was not only to lose weight. This alone was not a significant enough BIG WHY! My BIG WHY was an overall healthier me - all from the desire of no medication.
UPDATE - I am now doing strength training - YES!! The person that did not like exercise. NEVER say never - Never give up hope!
Why do you want to change something in your life? What is your BIG WHY? Let us take the journey together.
The journey continues..... Individuals that have made changes in their life, feel empowered with a CAN DO attitude. Let me help you reach your goals - whether organizing your finances or doing the required accounting, or taking that first baby step towards a better you.
